The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - Dev interviews

Maciej Szcześnik - Lead Gameplay Designer
What was the main assumption when making The Witcher: Enhanced Edition?
The main assumption when creating the Enhanced Edition was to take The Witcher players’ and fans’ suggestions into account to improve the overall game. There was plenty of feedback from fans, as well as our own ideas about how to upgrade the game. That’s the exciting way we spend our “vacation time” after a big deadline push. An ordinary man goes home, takes a looooong vacation, switches his phone off and enjoys some free time. Developers, however, suffer from a strange ailment – having finished the game they play it again at home and then they notice things to correct or improve. The Enhanced Edition is also our way of saying 'thank you' to all those folks who trusted us by buying our first game. As you probably know, those people will be able to download all of the upgrades for free.

Which changes in The Witcher: Enhanced Edition will be the most and least visible for players?
It's hard for me to speak for all the players, so I will tell you which changes are most noticeable for me. First of all, the new inventory is far clearer than the original. It's more pleasant to use and it's easier to find items you need, thanks to the sorting buttons and a separate space for alchemy components. Similarly, I like the diversification of monsters and NPCs, which makes the world around Geralt more real and definitely less repetitive. Personally, I like to play in Russian with Polish subtitles, so I enjoyed the mechanism of free choice of text and voice-overs. German and English players will surely notice the difference in the quality of dubbings, as we re-recorded the whole German version and over 5000 English dialogue lines. As for more subtle improvements, I would point to the possibility of switching off the automatic game saving, as well as the more natural dialogues found in the game, as we recorded over 250 new gesture animations. There are loads of improvements, and I believe that every player will have to answer for himself which changes he notices or likes the most. It's impossible to list everything we corrected; I will only add that apart from the completely new mechanisms, we were able to fix over 1000 smaller and bigger problems, the most significant of which were stability and level-load times.

Will all The Witcher: Enhanced Edition language versions contain the same corrections?
Yes, all the versions will have the same corrections. Moreover, it's not really applicable to talk about different Enhanced Edition language versions, as the game will now include all the languages it was localized into. Each player will be able to choose any subtitle and dubbing language from the game menu. Polish players suggested that we provide the English version of the game with Polish subs. Now they will be able to play not only in English, but also German, Italian, French, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian and Russian.

How long did it take to complete The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and how many people worked on it?
The works lasted for about six months and the project engaged over ten people full-time. We devoted a lot of resources and effort to make the Enhanced Edition. We all do hope our work will be fruitful and people will like the game even more now.

What were the reactions of journalists and fans to whom you presented The Witcher: Enhanced Edition at trade shows?
They were very positive. I think the most impactful moment was when, after a 20-minute presentation of the changes in TWEE, they were told that existing owners get everything for free. I suppose not many developers have done that before. Moreover, during one of the presentations, a journalist asked me: “Don’t you think all those writers who gave the original version a high review score might now feel fooled?” And you know, having thought it over I had to tell him that, though there is no way we would fool anyone, we actually benefited most from less-favourable reviews. They described most of the things we could work on in the Enhanced Edition.

Which of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition’s modifications and upgrades was best received?
That’s a tough question. I conducted close to one hundred presentations, I guess, and spontaneous reactions came out at various times. In the case of TWEE, what makes an impression is surely the inclusion of 10 language versions in one installation (I don’t think anyone’s done anything like that before). Additionally, I’m glad that I don’t need to explain to people that the changes to the user interface (such as the Inventory panel) are of greater significance than they seem. There was almost always someone in the crowd nodding knowingly and commenting on the changes being of great importance and usefulness.

What do you think gamers around the world associate The Witcher with?
I used to think that the most prominent features of the game were the plotline and combat system. But for some time now, I’ve been convinced that the chickens you meet and collect are equally important (if not more). You know… chicks. (Editor’s note: ooooh, chicks. I get it. You had me confused for a minute there.)

Why did CD Projekt RED decide to add voice-overs to the additional adventures available with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition?
We’ve added voice-overs because we knew that we had set a product standard, and fans expect that level of quality in everything we do. We couldn’t imagine enhancing the game with 5 hours of new content without meeting the same quality levels than the original game.

Why did CD Projekt RED decide to release The Witcher: Enhanced Edition?
The Enhanced Edition is a unique product for the entire gaming market. The direct reasons for making it were players' comments, remarks and doubts that we saw after the release of the original version of The Witcher. We analyzed all those voices thoroughly and realized that a few of them were repeated quite often. That’s when we made the decision to live up to our players' expectations and make a version of the game considered to be nearly flawless by them and by us. We also decided that those fans who bought the original version of The Witcher simply couldn’t be expected to pay more for this version – it simply wouldn't be fair. As a consequence, CD Projekt announced that The Witcher: Enhanced Edition content will be made available for free from website Ściągnij.pl after entering a valid registration code from the original game.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition will be released in…how many languages?
The Enhanced Edition will be published in all the languages the first version of the game was released in. What is more, all the languages will be installed from a CD with Additional Materials available in the TWEE package!

Will the contents of the TWEE box vary depending on the country of release?
Yes, but very slightly. We have four versions of the game that differ a bit, depending on where you live. It’s important to note, however, that each of them will be an exceptionally rich edition with great value, given market conditions and the fact that it will be available for the price of a regular game. All of the content is there – it just might be presented a bit differently.

Is it difficult to coordinate the release of such a product as TWEE for the whole world?
If it was easy, we wouldn’t have jobs at RED! All of our employees are specialists in their fields and that was, in my opinion, the key to success for The Witcher, and it will guarantee the same success for our next projects. As for coordination, each publisher has his market and knows its characteristics best. The role of RED, apart from creating the game itself, is to provide the publishers with the necessary PR materials, coordinate and supervise all the PR and marketing activities, accept all the materials, e.g. graphics produced by the publishers, co-promotions with external companies etc. There's plenty of that all and we never get bored.
